The Problem Every Business Owner Faces
You can do everything right and still get sued. A customer trips on a wet floor. A client claims your work damaged their property.
Someone says your advertising copied their idea. It doesn’t matter if the claim has merit—you still have to defend yourself. And legal defense costs money, even when you win.
One lawsuit can drain your savings, wipe out your profits, and put your entire business at risk. Without general liability insurance, you’re paying for attorneys, settlements, and judgments out of your own pocket.
And it’s not just lawsuits. If your business operations cause damage to someone else’s property—even accidentally—you’re responsible. A contractor damages a client’s floor. A delivery person knocks over expensive equipment. A product you sold causes an injury. These things happen to careful business owners every day.
The problem is, most business owners don’t think about liability until they’re facing a claim. By then, it’s too late to get coverage. The damage is done, and the bills are coming.
Your business faces risks simply by operating. General liability insurance is how you make sure those risks don’t destroy what you’ve built.
Our Approach to General Liability Coverage
At The James Agency, we help business owners understand their liability exposure and get coverage that actually protects them.
We start by learning about your business. What do you do? Do you have customers visiting your location? Do you work at client sites? Do you sell products? Do you advertise? Each of these creates different liability risks.
Then we help you figure out how much coverage you actually need. A lot of business owners carry the minimum limits because that’s what a contract required—but minimum limits might not be enough if a serious claim comes your way. We’ll help you set limits that make sense for your situation.
We also explain what general liability covers and what it doesn’t. It’s not a catch-all policy. Professional mistakes, employee injuries, auto accidents—these need separate coverages. We’ll make sure you understand where GL fits and where you might have gaps.
Because we work with multiple carriers, we can find coverage designed for your type of business. Contractors, retailers, professional services, restaurants—different industries face different risks, and carriers price accordingly.
And when a claim happens, we’re in your corner. We help you report it, explain what to expect, and follow up to make sure it’s handled.

We look at the specific risks your business faces—premises liability, products liability, completed operations, advertising injury. We identify what coverage you need and what limits make sense.
We find the right policy
We shop carriers who understand your industry and find coverage that fits your operation. Not a generic policy—one built for what you actually do.

What You Get With Us
Protection against third-party claims
If someone outside your business—a customer, client, or member of the public—claims your business caused them injury or property damage, general liability coverage helps pay for your defense and any settlements or judgments.
Premises liability coverage
If someone is injured at your business location—a slip and fall, a falling object, a trip hazard—this coverage helps protect you. It applies whether you own your space or lease it.
Products liability coverage
If a product you sell or distribute causes injury or damage, products liability coverage helps protect you from claims. This applies even after the product leaves your hands.
Completed operations coverage
If your work causes damage after you've finished the job—a contractor's installation fails, a repair causes problems later—completed operations coverage helps protect you.
Personal and advertising injury coverage
If someone claims your business committed libel, slander, copyright infringement, or other advertising injuries, this coverage helps pay for your defense.
Legal defense costs covered
Even if a claim has no merit, you have to defend yourself. General liability pays for attorneys, court costs, and other legal expenses—often in addition to your policy limits.
Certificates of insurance when you need them
Many clients and contracts require proof of general liability coverage. We get COIs to you fast—usually within the hour.

Common Concerns
I've never had a claim
That's good—but it doesn't mean you won't. Claims happen to careful business owners every day. One slip and fall, one property damage incident, one frivolous lawsuit—and you're facing expenses that general liability would have covered.
I'm careful about how I run my business.
You can do everything right and still face a claim. Accidents happen. Customers get hurt. Clients get upset. Being careful is important, but it doesn't make you immune to lawsuits.
I only have the minimum coverage my contract required.
That might not be enough. Minimum limits are just that—minimums. A serious claim can easily exceed $300,000 or $500,000. We'll help you figure out what limits actually protect your business.
My BOP already includes general liability
It does—but are the limits enough? And does it cover everything you need? We'll review your BOP and make sure your liability coverage matches your actual exposure.
General liability seems expensive
It's a lot less expensive than a lawsuit. A single claim can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. General liability protects your business for a fraction of that. We'll show you exactly what it costs.
General Liability Insurance Questions
What does general liability insurance cover?
It covers third-party claims of bodily injury, property damage, and personal/advertising injury. If a customer is hurt at your location, your work damages someone’s property, or someone claims your advertising harmed them, GL helps pay for defense and damages.
What doesn't general liability cover?
It doesn’t cover professional errors (that’s professional liability), employee injuries (that’s workers comp), auto accidents (that’s commercial auto), or damage to your own property (that’s property insurance). We’ll help you identify if you need additional coverages.
How much general liability insurance do I need?
It depends on your business, your contracts, and your risk exposure. Many businesses carry $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate, but some need more. We’ll help you determine appropriate limits.
Is general liability required by law?
Not by law, but many clients, landlords, and contracts require it. Even if no one requires it, it’s essential protection for any business that interacts with the public.
What's the difference between occurrence and aggregate limits?
Per-occurrence is the maximum the policy pays for a single claim. Aggregate is the maximum it pays for all claims during the policy period. Both limits matter when evaluating your coverage.
Does general liability cover my employees if they get hurt?
No. Employee injuries are covered by workers compensation insurance, not general liability. GL covers injuries to third parties—customers, clients, and the public.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?
Fast. We typically get COIs to you within the hour. If you need proof of coverage for a contract or job, just call us.
